How do I join the SWAP Modelers Club?

The first step is to join the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). This is a national organization that promotes, develops, educates, and advances modeling activities. The AMA can be located on the internet at http://www.modelaircraft.org. The second step is to join the SWAP Modelers club. An application can be found here.

Why is AMA membership required?

By joining the AMA, you receive liability insurance in the amount of $2,500,000. This will help protect you if your aircraft is involved in some kind of mishap.

How much does it cost to join AMA and the SWAP Modelers?

It costs $58 annually to join the AMA. The SWAP Modelers charge $50 annually, plus a one-time assessment fee of $20. Senior citizens (age 62 and above) pay $35 annually, plus the one-time $20 assessment fee.

How much does it cost to get started in RC flying?

A nitro powered ready-to-fly trainer airplane and radio system can be purchased for approximately $320. Add $40 for fuel, fuel pump and a glow ignitor, and you're ready to go! Of course accessories to enhance your experience (e.g. a field box, an electric starter and battery, electric fuel pump, power panel) can be purchased at additional cost.

What are the flying field hours of operation?

On Sunday and major holidays, the field is open 1200 until dusk. Every other day, the field is open 0900 until dusk.
